IOM Turkey mourns the loss of our dear colleague Selin Avşarcan.

Selin was born in 1987 in Denizli, a town in southwestern Turkey. After completing her high school studies in Denizli, she was accepted to Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in translation and interpreting. She also pursued a second bachelor’s degree in international relations at Anadolu University. She started her career with the Ministry of Interior in early 2012 working there for five years as a translator in the IT Department and then was assigned as a Project Officer in MoI’s Directorate General of Provincial Administration Department of Border Management. During her career at the ministry she was responsible for the coordination of European Union-funded projects.

Selin joined IOM Turkey’s Integrated Border Management Unit (IBM) in Autumn 2017 as Senior Programme Assistant. Selin very quickly and easily integrated into the IBM Unit and was strategically supporting the implementation of several projects. She was a key staff responsible for developing new project proposals in order to sustain and expand IBM operations in Turkey. In May 2019, Selin was promoted to the position of National IBM Programme Officer, an essential position with and crucial role in the unit.

Selin was very responsible, dedicated, and highly motivated. She would always stay on top of her duties, responsibilities, and often put her colleagues before herself. She had strong communication skills and touched the lives of so many colleagues and friends. With her presence and good sense of humor, she brought positive energy into our lives.

Selin was a lover of quality wine and movies. Selin always enjoyed eating and drinking with her friends and she was an expert in preparing cocktails. Her intellectual and unique perspective on life guided her friends through good and bad times.

Her smiling face, vibrant personality and dedication to her work will be never forgotten.

The IOM Turkey mission will miss her so much.
